When i saw Yzy’s new show in Paris with controvercial “White Lives Matter” shirt, immediately I thought about how this is the problem when people treats social activism as marketing stunt. They take the banners and calls as “branding message” to create a sense of rebellious within the capitalistic world.

However, I took a guess about Kanye, a man who later posted on Instagram saying that Black Lives Matter is a scam. I started to think about his past interviews. I thought there might be a small chance that this whole controversy is to show that Black Lives always matters, the fact to reinforce the message is making black lives matter les sthan other lives because it matters always. But this type of understanding is also taking the social movement out of context, it started from George Floyd who was brutally killed by policeman over exercising their power. There ARE institutional discrimination exists in public institutions that capable of using weapon and violence, hence the Black lives matter is an important message to challenge the existing discrimination.

The fact that Kanye says that it’s a scam and it’s over. I couldn’t help wonder that if he is an accelerationist that thinks as long as we have advancing technology or we kept moving forward, then we won’t have to stuck with social discussion and change will happen. This is a wishful thinking, unfortunately it is not like that, social movement doesn’t work like that, what he tries to look over, or to surpass, wounds not treated always come back in another form of snowball. It takes time to care for social justice and conversations to flow.

BLACK LIVES MATTER.
